I think this is interesting. In the United States soap operas are usually about middle-class to upper-middle class beautiful people. Even if there is a central working class character, they usually end up entangled in the lives of these upper-middle class families and the show is filled with dramatic scenes in beautiful living rooms with soft lighting and candles burning for zooming into that will help segue into a commercial.
I use US soaps as an example because we don’t have any Canadian soap operas and the only ones that air here are American or British (Coronation Street is pretty popular).
